How To Create A Facebook Group

The social networking site Facebook provides many different features for connecting people who share the same interests and concerns. If you want to discuss your own favorite topics with many different Facebook users you will need to know how to create a Facebook group.

Facebook allows its users to create their own groups about whatever topics that they like. These groups can be public or private and you can invite anyone who has a Facebook account to join your group. Members of a group can post pictures, wall comments, and more. Groups are a great way to get a bunch of people who share the same passion together and you can have yours up and running in a few minutes.

How to Create a Facebook Group

This video walks you through the steps of creating a new group on Facebook. First you must locate the group section of Facebook and create a new group. Enter all of the relevant information in the appropriate dialog boxes. Choose the settings for your group and publish the new group to the public.

Step 1: Where to Locate Groups on Facebook

The first step in creating a new Facebook group is to locate the group section of the Facebook website. Begin by logging into your Facebook account. Once you have logged in click on Groups on the left-hand side column of the page. This will take you to the group section of Facebook. Here you can see what groups you are a part of as well as create your own group. When you have published your group it will appear on this page for all of your group's members.1

Step 2: Creating a Facebook Group

To create a Facebook group click on the + Create a Group button at the top of the page. This will bring you to a blank group form that you must fill out. Begin with the title of your new group and enter it in the Group Name dialog box. Next enter a description for your group in the Description dialog box. It can be as detailed or as vague as you like. Choose a category for your group from the Group Type drop down menu and select a subcategory as well. These are the only required areas on the form but you can continue to fill out as much of the dialog boxes as you like. If your group is part of a physical department you can enter that name in the Office dialog box. An official group email or your own email address would go in the Email dialog box, just as your group's website would go in the Website dialog box. Lastly you can enter an address for your group in the Street and City/Town dialog boxes. Once you have finished entering all of your group's information simply click the Create Group button.2

Step 3: Customizing a Facebook Group

Clicking the Create Group button begins the process of customizing and publishing your new Facebook group. Your browser will be redirected to the customization page and here you will choose the settings for your new group. You can choose whether regular members can write on the group's wall, enable the discussion board, enable links and videos, set the group's privacy level, and much more. You can also adjust these settings in the future if you change your mind.

Once you have all of your group's settings the way you want them, click the Save button. A pop-up window will appear asking you whether or not to publish you group. Click Publish and your group will be created and go public. Now anyone can see your group, according to your security settings, and you can begin inviting members to join, adding photos to your group's album, etc.3

Tips

Try looking to see if a similar group already exists before creating a new Facebook group.

Your group can be open to the public, require administrative approval to join, or be by invitation only.

Group photo albums can hold more photos than personal account albums.4
