Hundreds of millions of people all over the world have signed up for Facebook and discovered that it is a great way to keep in touch with family and friends. In order to keep everyone on your list of Facebook friends up to date with your latest contact and personal information, you'll have to change the details of your profile from time to time. You can edit just one or all of the aspects of your profile and make changes as often as you wish.

A Facebook profile can quickly and easily be updated any time you want using the following instructions. Doing so can be a time-effective way to tell all your Facebook friends that some aspect of your life has changed, since you won't have to send out a message to each one of them individually.

How to Edit Your Facebook Profile

Here we see how to edit your Facebook Profile information, including the addition of your high school, college, and employer information. Once you have logged into Facebook, editing your profile will be step 2. Simply start typing the school you are currently going to or have gone to and an auto populate box will help fill in the information. After that step, Facebook offers a list of people you may know to add to your Facebook Friends.

Step 1: Log in to Facebook

  • Before you can make any changes to your Facebook profile, you'll have to first log in to your Facebook account.
  1. Go to the Facebook homepage or Facebook log in page.1
  2. Enter your user name or email address in the required field.
  3. Enter your password in the "Password" field.
  4. Hit your "Enter" key or click the "Login" button.
  5. Once you are logged in, navigate to your profile page by clicking on the "Profile" option in the top Facebook toolbar.

Step 2: Edit Your Profile

  • On your profile page, you should see a "Edit My Profile" option directly beneath your profile picture.2
  1. Click on the "Edit My Profile" option.
  2. You will be directed to the "Basic Information" page. If you want to edit any of the information on this page, do so, and then press the "Save Changes" button at the bottom of the page.
  3. To edit other sections of your profile, scroll down the page and then select the "Personal Information," "Contact Information," or "Education and Work" tabs.
  4. Make your desired changes and remember to hit the "Save Changes" button to save your edits on each page.
  5. After you have made all of your desired changes, click on the "Done Editing" button at the top of the page.
  6. You will be redirected to your profile information page. Review your edits to ensure that they appear as you had intended.

Step 3: Control What Information People Can See

Facebook has come under fire for changing their privacy policies and default settings. To make sure you are only sharing the information you want to share with the people you want to share it with, you'll need to adjust your Facebook privacy options.3

  1. Click "Account" in the top right hand corner of the screen and in the drop-down menu, choose "Privacy Settings".
  2. The privacy levels on the left set you information available to "Everyone", "Friends of Friends", "Friends Only", Facebook's "Recommended" settings, and "Custom", which allows you to choose your options individually.
  3. To only allow Friends to see any part of your profile, choose "Friends Only". You'll likely want to uncheck the box in the lower section of the settings that says "Let friends of people tagged in my photos and posts see them". Click "Apply These Settings" to finalize your choices.
  4. You may want to choose to limit what some friends see on your profile, while allowing the rest of your friends to see the items. Choose "Custom" and click on "Customize Settings". From there, on every drop-down menu, you'll find the option to "Customize". You'll have the option to make this info visible to certain people or to hide the info from specific people. Choose "Save Setting" to apply your changes.
  5. On the main privacy page, click the "View Settings" link under "Basic Directory Information". With this tool, you can choose who can find you and what they will see and also control who can contact you. Each setting will have a separate drop-down menu.
  6. You can also set the privacy level for your photos by the album in which they are contained. Each Album or other photo type will have a separate drop-down menu.
